A small plane crashed into a rural house, killing a mother and child aboard the aircraft and causing a fire that destroyed the home.

The plane, a single-engine Cessna 177, crashed about 9:30 p.m. Friday, officials said. The pilot was attempting to land at a small airfield near Kent, about 20 miles south of Seattle.

The 32-year-old pilot was hospitalized in serious condition Saturday. The bodies of his 35-year-old wife and 9-year-old son were found inside the gutted house. The owner of the house, who was the only person inside, was not hurt.
