LONG BEACH : Owners of Flooded Condos Get $377,000
Owners of a condominium complex that was flooded during the heavy storms of 1992 have been awarded $377,000 from the city.
A Superior Court jury in Long Beach found that the city allowed a nuisance to exist, resulting in the flooding at the Orangewood Village complex in the 6600 block of Orange Avenue. Garages in the complex were engulfed in up to eight feet of water in December, 1992, when a nearby pumping station failed to keep up with the deluge.
The Orangewood homeowners’ association had asked for as much as $3.5 million in damages to cars and other property.
The jury, however, decided that the city was not negligent nor purposefully allowed a dangerous situation to exist, said Tom Reeves, principal deputy city attorney.
The city does not plan to appeal, Reeves said. The majority of the jury award will go to the homeowners’ association.
