In his letter of April 23, James Selfridge of Rancho Palos Verdes complains that no U.S. airlines were offering to match an Air France special 30% discount fare to Europe for veterans (“Do U.S. Carriers Care?”). Apparently Mr. Selfridge is unaware that many foreign flag airlines receive large subsidies from their governments, which help them to cover their operating costs. No U.S. flag airline receives any help from the United States. Most U.S. airlines are operating at a loss; some have failed! Others are operating under Chapter 11.
