An Egyptian doctor who said he was publicly flogged in Saudi Arabia told a news conference Sunday that the judge who sentenced him had accepted his innocence but was forced to go ahead with the punishment.

Mohammed Kamel Mohammed Khalifa said he was given 80 lashes in the Saudi town of Al Bukayriyah Tuesday after refusing to withdraw accusations he made in private against a Saudi teacher he said sexually assaulted his 7-year-old son.

“The judge who sentenced me called me in to tell me that he believed me and believed my 7-year-old son, but that this matter had gone beyond his hands,” Khalifa said. The case has dominated Egypt’s opposition press.
