CASTAIC — Five inmates were hospitalized after a racially divided fight involving about 60 prisoners Tuesday night at the Peter J. Pitchess Honor Rancho, although none sustained serious injuries, authorities said.
The fight erupted about 11:20 p.m. in a dormitory at the maximum-security East Facility, said Sgt. Noel Lanier of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. He said black and Latino inmates fought each other using mop and broom handles.
Sheriff’s deputies stopped the five-minute fight using pepper spray and three sting-ball grenades, which detonate stinging plastic pellets, Lanier said. No deputies were injured.
Five inmates were taken to the Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center’s jail ward, Lanier said. Four were treated for lacerations and a fifth for a dislocated shoulder.
In addition, another inmate was treated at the jail’s clinic for exposure to the pepper spray, Lanier said.
