The gym at Simi Valley High School, closed since it was damaged in the Northridge earthquake, may reopen in September under an expedited asbestos removal plan approved by the school board and possibly funded by FEMA.
At its Tuesday night meeting, trustees of the Simi Valley Unified School District voted unanimously to give the asbestos removal emergency status, which allows district officials to hire a contractor for the job without going through a lengthy bid process.
“If we delay it, we will not have this building available in September,” district business official Lowell Schultze told the board.
The asbestos removal, expected to cost about $90,000, is required before officials can assess whether the building can be salvaged, Schultze said. He said the Federal Emergency Management Agency is expected to reimburse the district for the work.
