ANAHEIM : 1st Public Hearing Tuesday on Frugal ‘95-96 Budget Plan

The first of three public hearings on the city’s proposed 1995-96 budget, which would be down 8.5% from that for the current year, will be Tuesday.

Under scrutiny will be a total proposed budget of more than $573 million.

Although 31 city positions are slated for elimination, including nine management jobs, the budget calls for the addition of nine police officers. Salaries for the new officers would be partially funded through a federal program.

Public safety continues to be a high priority for the city, which has added 42 sworn personnel to its Police Department in the past five years. During the same period, Anaheim has reduced its overall municipal work force by 241 positions.

The new budget, as proposed, would also restore Monday service hours at four branches of the city library, and services to youth and families would be expanded in response to community feedback about gang and drug problems in the city.

The three budget hearings will be at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, June 13 and June 20.

At a regular City Council meeting following next week’s session, topics scheduled for discussion include Anaheim’s participation in a joint-powers authority that would finance and regulate a countywide emergency communications system.

The system would electronically link city and county law enforcement, fire and public works departments using an 81-channel radio network.

Also on the council agenda for the 5 p.m. meeting is a proposal to dissolve the city’s Investment Review Committee and form an Investment Advisory Commission.

The commission would assist council members and the city treasurer in investments and other financial matters.
