The Angels’ catching corps took another hit Saturday when Andy Allanson, playing in place of injured starter Greg Myers, was spiked on the back of his left hand by Yankee second baseman Randy Velarde after being tagged out in a rundown.

The gash was so deep Allanson said he “could see my knuckles and tendons.” He was taken to Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center for 16 stitches after the game.

“It’s too bad I got hurt, and I’m pretty miserable,” Allanson said. “But I’m over .200, at least I won that battle.”

Allanson’s RBI single in the sixth pushed his average to .209, but he might have to sit out a few days. Myers, who missed his second consecutive game because of a strained left quadriceps, hopes to return today, but if he can’t, the Angels will go with untested rookie Mark Dalesandro, who has four at-bats this season.

Tim Salmon’s first-inning single Saturday was the 300th his of his career. . . . Angel shortstop Gary DiSarcina now has 18 extra-base hits, only one fewer than he had last season. . . . Cleveland appears to be the class of the American League, but the Angels caught a break--seven games against the Indians were wiped out by the strike, and the Angels will have to play Cleveland only five times.
