POINT MUGU : Funding Sought to Fight Base Closure

Share

Members of the countywide task force plotting to keep the Point Mugu Navy base off a final closure list will ask the Ventura City Council tonight for money to keep their effort going.

Hoping to raise $50,000 to lobby federal officials to keep Point Mugu open, the committee is asking each of the cities in Ventura County to contribute an equitable share of the expense.

A formula based on population and the impact the closure would have on each city calls for Ventura to contribute $4,350 to the lobbying effort.

Last month, the federal base-closing committee recommended that Point Mugu be shut down as part of an ongoing military downsizing.

But base supporters say closing the facility would mean the loss of thousands of jobs and millions of dollars from the Ventura County economy. Task force members plan to make a presentation to the City Council at 6 p.m. City Manager Donna Landeros is recommending that the council approve the request.
