Orange County Almanac

Share

Orange County is nationally known as a bastion of Republicanism, but the county has also experienced some swings into the Democratic fold.

During the Depression years of the 1930s, the county was in the Democratic Party’s sphere of influence. In 1932, county voters gave Franklin D. Roosevelt a 1,212-vote majority, although Republicans held a 3-2 edge in voter registration. There were only about 120,000 residents in the county at that time.

By 1936, Democratic registration outstripped that of the GOP. The county rolls showed 35,222 Democrats registered in 1936, compared with 28,805 Republicans.
