Applicants Sought for Cypress School Board

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Applications are being accepted for a vacancy on the Cypress School District Board of Trustees.

The vacant seat belonged to veteran trustee Ventura Cornejo Jr., who resigned May 31. Cornejo, 62, who served on the board almost 25 years, stepped down because he is also retiring as a high school teacher in Anaheim Union High School District.

The Cypress district governs elementary schools in that city and parts of Buena Park and La Palma. The district board, at a special meeting Tuesday night, voted to appoint a successor to Cornejo rather than call a special election.

Supt. William Eller said applications will be accepted at district headquarters, 9470 Moody St., until noon June 16. Application forms are available at district headquarters during business hours, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.

State law calls for an applicant for the school board to be a U.S. citizen, at least 18 years old, a resident of the school district and a registered voter. Eller said that application forms ask candidates to submit a resume and a brief “letter of interest,” and to respond to a questionnaire.

Eller said the board will review the applications, then interview candidates June 20-21. The board may vote for its choice on June 21, following all interviews, or may wait until next month, Eller said. Under state law, the board has until July 31 to fill the vacancy, he said.
