More than 460 Irvine children were invited to talk back to adults in a letter-writing contest called “If I could tell adults anything, I would tell them . . .” sponsored by Kid-Phone, a city-run telephone hot line for children.

First-place winner Jake Parsons, 10, a fourth-grader at Eastshore Elementary School, advises parents to lighten up if they want the truth from their children. “Don’t tax our honesty too much,” Jake wrote. “We are easily frightened into telling lies.”

And what do you say to your hideously attired, out-of-style parent? Jake’s diplomatic reminder: “We know as the styles change so much, you may not always be up-to-date. We know it’s hard, but please try.”
