PACOIMA : 2 Hearings Planned on Proposed Pipeline

A public hearing will be hosted Tuesday night by Los Angeles Councilman Richard Alarcon to discuss the proposed Pacific Pipeline project, a 132-mile crude-oil pipeline that would run from Kern County to South Bay refineries through the San Fernando Valley.
The U.S. Forest Service and the California Public Utilities Commission are scheduled to hold a hearing on the same issue during the afternoon, but Alarcon’s office decided to hold an evening hearing to enable more residents to attend.
“This is a working-class district,” said Woodland Hastings, an Alarcon aide. “We want people to be able to participate in this.” A representative from the project will also be on hand.
Hastings said proponents of the project contend that the pipeline would be a safer way to transport oil. But Hastings said there is actually a risk attached to putting another pipeline in seismically unstable territory.
About eight miles of the Pacific Pipeline would run through portions of Sylmar, Pacoima, Sun Valley and Mission Hills, Hastings said.
The afternoon hearing will run from 1 to 3 p.m., with the evening session from 7:30 to 10 p.m. Both will be held at the Ritchie Valens Recreation Center, 10736 Laurel Canyon Blvd., in Pacoima.
