HUNTINGTON PARK : Murder Suspect Handed Over to Mexican Police
After confessing to a 1992 murder of a police officer in Mexico, a Mexican national has been turned over to authorities in Tijuana, authorities said.
Ramon Ayala Lomeli, 22, who had used the identity of his dead brother, Antonio, for three years, was arrested by Huntington Park police June 2 on an assault charge, said Detective Cosme Lozano of the Huntington Park Police Department.
Following a tip from an informant, who said Lomeli was using a fraudulent name, Lozano solicited the help of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Foreign Prosecution Unit, which confirmed that Lomeli was wanted for the shooting death of a Jalisco state police officer and wounding of another.
According to Mexican Federal Judicial police, the two officers were attempting to detain Lomeli as a suspect in a robbery in Jalisco. Lomeli fought with the officers and after overpowering one of the them, he shot him six times.
Lomeli, who was residing in Lynwood, was in hiding in various parts of Mexico until he arrived in California last month, Lozano said.
