Share

A scholarship fund has been established to honor the memory of William B. Phillips, a retired history professor and original faculty member of Saddleback College who died Sunday. He was 62.

Phillips, of Mission Viejo, began teaching at the college in 1968 shortly after it opened and retired in May. He died from a bacterial infection to his heart. Memorial services were Wednesday.

Phillips, a native of Santa Ana, worked as a counselor, dean of students and sports coach at Garden Grove and La Quinta high schools before coming to Saddleback College. He was a cum laude graduate of Cal State Long Beach.

He also held several leadership positions in campus organizations, including the Academic Senate, Faculty Assn. and Curriculum Committee. He was named Teacher of the Year at the college in 1973.

Lloyd Evans, the college’s dean of the Division of Social and Behavioral Sciences, said Phillips was loved and admired by colleagues for his compassionate personality.

Phillips is survived by his son, Larry; daughter, Lori Allen; and three grandsons.
