SMALL FACES: A new Green Day song, “J.A.R.,” will be featured in the film “Angus,” a story about a misfit teen. The soundtrack album is due in late August, with the film premiering the following month. . . . Oasis, having apparently survived internal strife that gained the band much notoriety in England, is about halfway through recording its second album. No release date is set yet. . . . Still grappling with turmoil are the Stone Roses, who have canceled appearances in Japan and England due to mountain biking injuries suffered by guitarist John Squire in the Bay Area last weekend. . . .

Reprise will release Aimee Mann’s “I’m With Stupid,” which was left in limbo after Imago Records was cut loose by BMG earlier this year. The album is due July 11. . . . Brian Eno has finished a beat-driven ambient album with production by PiL co-founder Jah Wobble. It’s due in the fall. . . . Rickie Lee Jones’ live album, produced by Russ Titelman, is due in late August. . . . Texas folk-country veteran Jimmie Dale Gilmore just finished his next album with producer Bones Howe, known for his work with Tom Waits.

AND ONE MORE THING: Much of the on-line rock chatter in the last week concerned Sen. Bob Dole’s condemnation of the entertainment industry for producing, among other things, violent and sexually explicit rap and rock. There was much hue and cry about the prospects for pop music under the Republican-controlled Congress and, perhaps, White House in the near future.

But one America Online contributor, using the screen name TriStar001, pointed out that rock has historically fared well during GOP administrations.

“Nixon in White House . . . got Zeppelin. . . . Carter in White House . . . got Debby Boone,” he wrote. “Bush in White House . . . got Nirvana. . . . Clinton in White House . . . got Sheryl Crow.”

And don’t forget that rock was invented during the Eisenhower years.*
