That’s part of the plan for the Race to Erase MS, a charity fund-raiser that’s been held in Vail and Aspen for the last three years. It moves to UCLA on June 1, 1996.

The event’s founder, Nancy Davis, said the logistics problems of hauling guests to Colorado and the fact that most of the supporters live in Southern California were reasons behind the move.

Plans are to expand the race, which raised $1.8 million last year, to include Rollerblading, an obstacle course, basketball and, in some high-tech way, skiing.

“Believe me, it can be done,” said Davis about the skiing.

Just Charge It: The reopening of the Beverly Hills Hotel turns out to have been a boost for the local economy in more ways than one.

Besides the new jobs the Pink Palace provides, there appear to have been major shopping trips to Rodeo Drive by female family members of the hotel’s owner, the Sultan of Brunei.

The family members, who stayed at the Bel-Air Hotel (now owned by the Sultan’s brother), did the kind of purchasing that only a $40-billion fortune can sustain: One store reportedly did $90,000 in evening gown sales alone.

Going Wiggy: Brent Bolthouse, club meister extraordinaire, has sold his interest in the recently closed Babylon restaurant and is opening a coffee house--called, appropriately enough, The Coffee House--on Sunset Boulevard across from the Chateau Marmont.

Bolthouse, who’s on the verge of buying the Gaslight and turning it into a concert venue, said the restaurant business was too time-consuming.

“What I learned is I can’t do things where I have to be around all night worrying about what big wig gets the right table,” said Bolthouse.
