Condos Evacuated After Gas Line Breaks

Share

About 15 to 20 residents of a condominium complex were evacuated from their homes for about three hours Saturday morning after a construction crew operating a backhoe ruptured a four-inch natural-gas line, city fire officials said.

The gas line broke about 8:40 a.m., and about 14 firefighters responded to the scene on Huntington Street north of Main Street to avert any fire danger, said Huntington Beach Battalion Chief Steve Parker.

A dozen townhouse units were evacuated and their gas mains turned off, and residents were asked to move to the back of the complex.

Huntington Street was also closed for most of the morning as gas company crews worked to pinch off the line, Parker said.

“We just set up our apparatus to plan for the worst and hope for the best,” Parker said.

No injuries were reported.
