She’s Rancher ‘On the Side’
WHOOPI GOLDBERG, who co-stars with Gerard Depardieu in the upcoming comedy “Bogus” and co-stars with Mary-Louise Parker and Drew Barrymore in the movie “Boys on the Side,” has purchased a large ranch near Santa Barbara.
Goldberg, who won an Oscar for her performance as a reluctant clairvoyant in “Ghost” (1990), plays the aunt of a boy with an imaginary friend in “Bogus,” to be released this fall. She plays a struggling singer who is a lesbian in “Boys on the Side.”
Goldberg was Hollywood’s highest-paid female star when she made $8 million for her role in “Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit” in 1993.
The ranch, which she bought for a little more than $1 million, has a spring, a stream, an adobe house with four bedrooms and two-foot-thick walls; a two-bedroom guest house and a caretaker’s cottage. The houses are hidden by what has been called “an enormous number of oak trees.”
Goldberg, 45, lives primarily in a Pacific Palisades home that she bought two years ago for about $2.5 million. Last fall she was married in the house to Lyle Trachtenberg, a trade union organizer whom she met on the set of “Corrina, Corrina” (1994), in which she starred. Last year, she also played Buckwheat’s mom in “The Little Rascals,” was the voice of Shenzi the hyena in “The Lion King,” and hosted the 66th annual Academy Awards.
Diana Anderson of Fred Sands Realtors had the listing, and David Mossler of Mossler, Deasy & Doe, Beverly Hills, represented Goldberg, sources said.
JOHN HILLERMAN, who played the British major-domo Jonathan Higgins on “Magnum, P.I.,” has sold his Hollywood home to actor/producer/director Mark Linn-Baker for about $2 million, sources say. Hillerman was asking $2.4 million when he first listed the home in January.
Linn-Baker, who just got married last weekend, is best known to TV audiences as the exasperated Larry on the ABC sitcom “Perfect Strangers,” which aired from 1986 to 1993, but the Yale School of Drama graduate is also co-founder of the New York Stage & Film Co., which produces plays, short films and videos during the summer at New York’s Vassar College.
Hillerman decided to sell the house, which he bought in 1991, because he is spending most of his time in his Lake Arrowhead home, where he is writing a book and a TV series.
The Hollywood house, which is about 8,000 square feet in size and has city views, was listed by Kay Pick of Mike Silverman Estates, a Jon Douglas Co., Beverly Hills.
