YORBA LINDA : City Acquires Land for Sports Complex

The City Council has ratified an agreement with the Roman Catholic Bishop of Orange that provides the city with land for the planned Eastside Sports Complex.

In a separate action last week, the council approved a $2.5-million contract for a future gymnasium north of Yorba Linda Middle School.

“Boy, has it been a long time coming,” said Councilwoman Barbara Kiley. “The students at Eastside Middle School had nowhere to eat their lunch or hold an assembly. I’m thrilled to see it finally come to pass.”

The city awarded the contract for the gymnasium to Los Angeles-based Ford E.C. Inc., one of 12 bidders for the project, Public Works Director Roy F. Stephenson said. Construction is expected to begin in 30 to 45 days and will be completed in early 1996.

The city also acquired 83 acres of land at Esperanza and New River roads from the archdiocese, on which it will construct the Eastside Sports Complex. In return, it will pay $250,000 in cash and install curbs, gutters and road access for the remaining 23 acres that the church will retain for its own use.

The city plans to develop 15 of the 83 acres as an athletic complex that will eventually include baseball and softball fields, basketball courts, tennis courts and picnic and playground facilities, Stephenson said.
