BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Allanson Goes on Disabled List

Share

The V-shaped gash on the back of Andy Allanson’s left hand hasn’t healed properly, so the Angels put him on the 15-day disabled list Monday. Allanson received 16 stitches June 3 after being stepped on by the Yankees’ Randy Velarde during a rundown.

“It just keeps popping open and they’re afraid of infection,” said Allanson, who caught two innings June 8 in Boston. “I can tolerate the pain, but it’s on the back of the knuckles where the skin gets stretched every time you flex your hand.

“It’s kind of disappointing, but I’m starting to understand what they’re thinking. I thought you had to have 100 stitches before it was a big deal, but they’ve had it in a splint for three days now and they won’t even let me break a sweat because of the chance of infection.”

Catcher Chris Turner was recalled from Vancouver to replace Allanson and Manager Marcel Lachemann said Turner will probably platoon at catcher with Jorge Fabregas.

Turner, who was hitting .277 with a homer and 25 runs batted in at Vancouver, understands his promotion is probably only temporary, but returning to the Canadians won’t be that bad.

“We’re in first and 4 1/2 games up,” he said. “We’ve got a great team up there and we’ve been having a great time. It’s always a lot more fun when you’re winning.”

Oops Dept.: The Elias Sports Bureau, which originally reported that Lee Smith had eclipsed Cleveland’s Doug Jones’ major league record of 15 saves in 15 consecutive appearances Sunday, released a correction Monday. Turns out the Cubs’ Randy Myers also had 16 in a row.

It also turns out that a Cardinal reliever named Lee Smith had 17 straight saves between May 24 and June 28 in 1993.

Center fielder Jim Edmonds will have X-rays taken of his aching left foot again today as doctors try to determine the extent of the nagging injury that has hampered him for more than two weeks. “It’s been better the last three games,” Edmonds said. “They’re not really sure what it is, but they’re going to have to drag me off the field.”

Damion Easley’s right wrist was examined Monday by hand specialist Dr. Norm Zemel and a scheduled arthrogram was canceled. “I guess you could say he’s day-to-day,” Lachemann said, “although I think it will probably be several days.” . . . Left-hander Brian Anderson, who is rehabilitating his strained left biceps with Lake Elsinore, could return to the starting rotation as early as next Monday.
