Color It Black

Get out of the dark and get “In the Black,” an exhibit featuring 31 artists at the Cal State Los Angeles Luckman Fine Arts Gallery.

“In the Black” takes the racially based mythology of the word black and returns it to its artistic meaning and use as a color, exhibit organizers say.

This exhibit “is not just art from black artists. It takes black back to its definition and uses artists from every background,” said Myrella Moses, curator of the exhibit.

Through the works of artists of all races, cultures, ethnicities, genders and sexual orientations, “In the Black” explores the meaning of the word as it is used in social, economic, political and artistic commentary.

Most of the works are from Los Angeles-based artists such as John Outterbridge, Michael Garnes, Dean Dresser, Artis Lane and Alison and Lezley Saar. The work of New York photographer Lorna Simpson is also featured.

“In the Black” runs though Aug . 4 at the Luckman Fine Arts Gallery at Cal State Los Angeles, 5151 State University Drive. Gallery hours are from noon to 5, Monday through Thursday. Admission is free. Information: (213) 343-5121.
