GAIN Program

Thank you for your editorial explaining the benefits of the Greater Avenues for Independence program (June 1). The ABC Adult School, ABC Unified School District, in Cerritos, provides a GAIN program which trains students on Aid to Families with Dependent Children and provides for employment placement. The enthusiasm of the students in the program is a positive force. They are realizing the advantages of obtaining job-entry skills, and discovering that adult school provides state-of-the art vocational education. High-school-diploma and GED programs are provided as well, which increases self-confidence, esteem, competency and marketability.

This GAIN model provides for students who may have been high school dropouts and are now back in school, realizing that education is a link to transitioning their family into the mainstream. This model is assisting in breaking that spiraling cycle of generational welfare. This appears to be an investment that’s a powerful payoff to AFDC recipients, their families and society.
