Students from George White Elementary School organized a blood drive Friday for Tony Clay, a 46-year-old bus driver in the Capistrano Unified School District who needs a liver transplant.

Clay said that he was touched by the students’ project, which is part of the Kids in Community Service program. As part of his duties, Clay drives kindergarten students to George White Elementary School.

“One thing I’ve never been accused of is being at a loss of words, but I am a bit overwhelmed,” Case said Friday. “All I can keep saying is: ‘Thank you.’ ”

Case, a Carlsbad resident who has driven buses for the district for four years, said he needs the transplant because he has had hepatitis C and other liver-related problems.

The blood donated by adults during the drive will be used to replenish that used during his surgery, Case said.

Case has been on a waiting list for a new liver for less than a month and said he hopes to find a donor and undergo surgery in six months to a year.
