One man remained jailed and another hospitalized Monday after allegedly taking part in a gunfight near Isbell Middle School in Santa Paula, authorities said.

Police said Gilberto Vargas, 25, of Santa Paula jacked up Xavier Malagon’s car and took rims he said were his. Vargas left Malagon’s car on blocks, angering Malagon, Sgt. Gary Marshall said. Marshall said Malagon went to Vargas’ house in the 200 block of South 4th Street about 5:30 p.m. Sunday to take back the tire rims.

“Guns were drawn and shots were fired,” Marshall said. Marshall said Malagon was shot in the hand after a total of eight rounds were fired. Malagon was listed in stable condition at Ventura County Medical Center. Vargas was jailed on attempted murder charges and bail was set at $250,000.

Marshall said the case was turned over to the district attorney’s office for further investigation. He said it is possible that Malagon could be arrested in connection with the shootout.
