SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO : Proposed Roller Hockey Facility May Be Built Elsewhere

The developer of a roller hockey facility proposed in a neighborhood where most residents are senior citizens has said he will now look elsewhere to build the project.

Ken Guchereau of Costa Mesa-based Inline Sports Associates Inc., said that heavy opposition during a public workshop prompted his decision.

At the City Hall meeting last Wednesday, several dozen senior citizens showed up to oppose the project, which includes two roller hockey rinks, a warm-up rink, pro shop and snack bar.

The facility was envisioned to replace an existing tennis club in the 32000 block of San Juan Creek Road. The tennis club is in a quiet neighborhood with a seniors-only condominium complex and a retirement center.

Although the City Council could not take a formal vote last week, members unanimously agreed that they would oppose the project if it came before them later in a regular meeting.

Guchereau has since said that his firm will seek other potential sites in San Juan Capistrano and neighboring South County cities.

The city has offered to help Guchereau in his search for a more suitable place to build the facility.
