Costa Mesa : Council Taps Reserve to Add Police Officers
The City Council on Monday approved a $77.4-million budget for 1995-96 with one major change.
The council agreed to reduce its reserve fund from $14.8 million to $14.2 million to pay for more police protection. Although the budget already provided for the hiring of three new police officers, Councilman Gary Monahan said he was not satisfied.
Monahan said that, in light of recent violence on the west side of Costa Mesa, the city should do everything in its power to bolster police efforts.
The $600,000 reduction from the reserve will be enough to cover the cost of hiring six additional officers, buying a new patrol car and obtaining equipment.
