A former high school teacher in Ventura has been named principal of the city’s Anacapa Middle School, school officials said Wednesday.

Mike Johnson will replace retiring Principal Charlotte McElroy, who is stepping down after a 30-year tenure with the Ventura Unified School District, Supt. Joseph Spirito said.

Johnson currently is principal at Mitchell Community Elementary School in Canyon Country, a job he has held for three years, Spirito said. Previously, he was an assistant principal at Anacapa. Johnson has also taught at Buena High School and DeAnza Middle School.

Spirito said he picked Johnson because of his ties to the district and his desire to create a strong reading program at Anacapa.

His starting salary will be about $65,000, he said.
