Sylmar : Seminars Offered to Returning Students

Share

A daylong series of seminars designed to help students who are returning to school after long absences is planned for next month at Mission College.

The federally funded New Horizons program is designed to help single parents and others overcome fears of going back to college and to reinforce their career goals.

The seminars, scheduled to run from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on July 26, are planned for the college’s fourth annual Re-entry Day program.

Mission College has a high percentage of returning students, many of whom are women or Latino.

Seminar topics include stress management, career counseling, building self-esteem and assertiveness, parenting tips, dealing with relationships, overcoming addictive behavior and surviving school.

The survival tips are reminders of ideas that may have been forgotten: managing time, using study groups, working in a library to get away from distractions at home, using index cards to study for tests and taking regular breaks during long periods of work.

The seminars are free to returning students or those considering going back to college. To register, call Geri Shapiro at the college, (818) 364-7674.
