ANAHEIM : New Chief of Finance Considered

Share

The City Council today will consider appointing William G. Sweeney as Anaheim’s new finance director. He would succeed George Ferrone, who retired recently after nearly 20 years with the city.

Sweeney, the city’s budget and audit manager since 1992, would oversee 47 employees in his new position. His responsibilities would include business licenses, collections and data processing.

“Bill has excellent experience with financial affairs through his multifaceted 18-year career in local government,” said City Manager James D. Ruth.

Sweeney began working for the city in 1988 as finance and administrative services manager for Anaheim Stadium. He had worked 10 years with the city of Long Beach and one year with Santa Clara County.

Also on today’s council agenda is a proposal to extend a moratorium through the end of the year on new permits for street vendors.

The moratorium, due to expire Friday, was approved by the council last September and extended for six months in December. The extension was to allow time for city staff to address complaints from residents about trash, noise and loitering.

The moratorium does not affect the 150 licensed vendors who sell groceries, clothing, cigarettes and other items from parked trucks and vans.

John W. Poole, the city’s code enforcement manager, said progress is being made toward resolving disputes between vendors and residents but that more time is needed to develop a comprehensive ordinance.

The council will meet at 5 p.m. at City Hall, 200 S. Anaheim Blvd.
