UNDER ONE ROOF: Work begins Wednesday on a $10-million cancer center at Fountain Valley Regional Hospital and Medical Center, where services are scattered in separate buildings. The hospital plans high-tech treatments and wants university affiliation to boost research. The new center will be an information depot for the American Cancer Society. . . . The project “brings us one step closer to consolidating our premier cancer services in one facility,” says hospital CEO Richard E. Butler.

SOBER AS A JUDGE: Brewing beer at home became legal in 1978, but lately the practice has “just gone crazy” observes Tim Higman, organizer of the Orange County Fair home brew competition. This year’s contest has drawn a record 267 entrants, compared to 115 last year. . . . The mass entries pushed the judging from one day into a four-day taste fest so the 30 judges would not lose their objectivity. “We couldn’t do all those beers in one day,” says Higman. “Everyone had to be sober.”

MOTHER’S PRIDE: Irvine resident Suzanne Keefe knows the emotions the parents of Marina High alum Cherokee Parks (C1) will experience when the NBA draft is held Wednesday. . . . Three years ago her son, Utah Jazz forward Adam Keefe, was the 10th pick overall when drafted by the Atlanta Hawks. “I wish Cherokee’s parents well,” said Keefe, whose son visits home this week. “It will be an exciting and happy time, the culmination of a lot of years of hard work.”

PITCHING IN: Stephanie Edwards won’t be advertising produce specials when she appears in Costa Mesa tonight. Instead, the Lucky supermarket pitchwoman will help the Ecumenical Service Alliance kick off a pledge campaign to raise funds for the nonprofit agency, which helps about 70,000 needy people each year. . . . ESA officials say demand for their services is up, but donations remain flat.
