A motorist who was honked at for refusing to move through an intersection opened fire with a handgun and flattened two tires of a Jeep, police said Thursday.

The incident began just before midnight Wednesday on Culver Drive near Alton Parkway, Sgt. Phil Povey said. No injuries were reported.

Two Irvine men, ages 18 and 20, were on their way home from work at a restaurant where they are cooks when their Jeep pulled up behind a car at a stoplight. When the light turned green, the driver in front of them failed to move, so the Jeep’s driver honked his horn.

“Finally, the vehicle did” move, Povey said. “But then at the next red light, the suspect pulled up next to the victim vehicle, fired five shots and fled.”

At least two of the Jeep’s tires were flattened, Povey said, but the victims managed to drive to the police station about a mile away.
