Ted Allan; Author of Plays, Novels, Children’s Books

Ted Allan, 79, a versatile author who wrote well-regarded screenplays, stage plays, novels and children’s books. Allan received an Academy Award nomination for best original screenplay in 1976 for the script of Jan Kadar’s “Lies My Father Told Me.” He also wrote the screenplay for John Cassavetes’ “Love Streams.” Allan’s best-known book was a biography of Dr. Norman Bethune, a fellow Canadian with whom he served in a volunteer medical unit in the Spanish Civil War. Allan also wrote a novel about the Spanish Civil War, “This Time a Better Earth,” and a children’s book, “Willie, the Squowse,” that has been translated into 10 languages. His stage plays include “Double Image,” a 1957 murder mystery in which the hero impersonates his twin. In Toronto on June 29 of respiratory complications.
