A retired oil company attorney was named dean of the Ventura College of Law, the school’s board of trustees announced Thursday.

Donald A. Bright, 59, replaces William M. Fischbach, who retired last month.

“I hope to make it even more successful and prominent than it is now,” Bright said of the two-campus, 300-student college. The school’s second campus is in Santa Barbara.

Bright lives in Studio City with his two teen-age sons.

“I may not live in Studio City long,” Bright said after commuting to work Thursday. He said he is considering moving to Ventura County.

Bright earned his undergraduate degree at Syracuse University and law degree at Harvard University. He worked the last 20 years at Arco as associate general counsel for major litigation.

“I wanted a change in career,” Bright said. “I have done litigation all of my professional career. This is totally different.”

Bright will oversee 45 teachers at the law school.
