Scott Boyles; Journalist, Author of Old West Novels

Scott Boyles, 89, a retired journalist who wrote nine novels about the Old West under the pen name of Will C. Brown. A two-finger typist, Boyles began his journalism career by setting type as a teen-ager in his native Texas. After editing several Texas dailies, he moved in 1959 to Cardiff-by-the-Sea, where he wrote a “North Coast” column for the San Diego Evening Tribune. His first book, “The Border Jumpers,” became the basis for the 1958 movie “Man of the West,” starring Gary Cooper in his last cowboy epic. The book, Boyles’ personal favorite, won the Dell Book Award for best Western Dell novel of 1955. Another novel, “The Nameless Breed,” won the Spur Award for best Western novel of 1960. On June 25 in San Diego of pancreatic cancer.
