Tokofsky Retains Win After Recount of School Board Votes
Teacher David Tokofsky retained his victory in the Los Angeles Unified school board race Friday when a recount increased his lead over opponent Lucia Rivera by four votes.
Rivera had requested a recount in the race, after a preliminary tally had her losing by 72 votes out of more than 22,000 ballots cast.
On Wednesday and Thursday, 12 teams from the city clerk’s office hand-sorted the ballots, monitored by representatives for both candidates. The recount cost Rivera $12,896.
The review found four dozen ballots that had not been counted--26 for Tokofsky and 22 for Rivera--according to city election division chief Christine Heffron.
Most of the additions were absentee ballots rejected by city counting machines because voters had failed to completely punch out the holes next to their selection, Heffron said.
Tokofsky is to attend his first school board meeting Monday.
