Hospital Chief Seeks to Reassign Duties

Ventura County hospital administrators are seeking approval to reorganize nursing administration at the county’s hospital, a move that would save nearly $500,000 a year in operating costs.

Dr. Pierre Durand, director of the Ventura County Medical Center, said he has been able to eliminate 10 clinical manager positions through attrition. He said he now wants to reassign responsibilities for those jobs to newly classified managers--on a lower salary and benefits scale--to save money.

Durand said, however, that the reorganization was not caused by the county’s budget problems. He said he was forced to trim costs because of cutbacks in state and federal grants to the hospital.

“I had to do it,” he said.

The Board of Supervisors will consider approving Durand’s request for the new job classifications at its meeting Tuesday.
