Top Players Win in Table Tennis
The top-seeded players in men’s and women’s singles advanced to the round of 16 at the U.S. Open Table Tennis Championship Friday at the Anaheim Convention Center.
Guoliang Liu of China advanced by defeating Jamaica’s Michael Hyatt, 21-12, 21-15, 21-16. Liu will meet Darko Rop of Houston, who upset 13th-seeded Young Jin Kim of Korea in four games, in the third round beginning at 1 p.m.
Lijuan Geng won her second-round match by default; the top-seeded Canadian will meet Ai Sakata of Japan in the women’s third round which begins at 12:30 p.m.

Four Saddleback College baseball players are moving on to four-year schools.
Pitcher Chris Von Huben, who attended San Clemente High, will play for Concordia University next season. He was 0-1 in 10 appearances last season for Saddleback.
Pitcher Darin Mai and outfielder Jose Gonzalez will attend Cal Baptist. Mai was 2-2 with two saves, and Gonzalez hit .377. Danny Anderson, a former Dana Hills pitcher who was 6-0 with a 3.83 earned-run average last season, will attend Azusa Pacific.
