THOUSAND OAKS : Phone Service Slated to Be Restored Today

Share

Telephone service is expected to be restored today for about 2,000 Thousand Oaks residents whose service was cut off Thursday when a contractor accidentally sliced through an underground cable.

The contractor badly damaged an eight-inch line buried about eight feet underground while boring for soil samples under Thousand Oaks Boulevard near Conejo School Road, GTE officials said Saturday.

Two GTE crews of about 15 people have worked around the clock since Thursday afternoon to repair the damaged cable, which is made up of 2,700 tiny wires. Repairs have been slow because of the severity of the break, officials said.

“Each of the wires has to be rewired and then tested,” GTE’s Mike Murray said. “It’s a painstaking procedure.”
