ANAHEIM : New Police Contract Is on Agenda

Share

A proposed three-year contract and raise for officers represented by the Anaheim Police Assn. is among items to be considered today by the City Council.

The contract, which has been ratified by the police union and awaits council approval, calls for a 4% hike in base pay starting in October of next year. An additional 2% raise would be given in 1997 if the city’s sales-tax revenue increases by 10% or more above projections.

The agreement also includes a provision to bolster the city’s community policing efforts by encouraging officers to move to Anaheim. Under the proposal, which would be effective this summer, officers would be eligible for no-interest, $10,000 loans to help buy homes in the city. The loans would be forgiven at the rate of $1,000 per year for each year the officers remain employed by the city.

The union represents 350 police officers in the city.

Among the other items on the council agenda is consideration of the color palette and paving materials for the community ice rink being built downtown by Walt Disney Co.

Plans call for the ice rink plaza at Lincoln Avenue and Clementine Street to be painted with colors of the Mighty Ducks hockey team: purple, jade, silver and white. “It’s going to be colorful,” said Richard Bruckner, manager of economic development and redevelopment for the city.

The council meeting is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. at City Hall, 200 S. Anaheim Blvd. Information: (714) 254-5100.
