SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO : City Puts Off Parking Fees for Rail Travelers

Share

City officials say they won’t start charging rail commuters who use 131 parking spaces in a downtown parking structure for at least another three weeks.

An ordinance allowing the fees went into effect last week, but the two electronic meters needed to monitor the parking spaces reserved for rail commuters are not ready to be installed, said Douglas Dumhart, a city management analyst.

Dumhart said the city would hand out flyers to commuters, notifying them of the first day the fees will be levied.

For rail commuters who pay daily, the city will charge 25 cents per hour from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., with a $2-a-day maximum. Annual parking passes also will be sold for $125 to San Juan Capistrano residents and $400 for non-residents.

The parking fees will be collected to help offset an annual city expense of more than $100,000 to lease the spaces from the Franciscan Plaza.
