Westside : Groups Sue to Block Marina Development

Share

Three groups joined forces to file suit over Los Angeles County’s plan for massive redevelopment of Marina del Rey.

The lawsuit--filed in San Francisco Superior Court against the county and the California Coastal Commission--complains that the plan favors commercial and residential use instead of visitor and recreational purposes. That, opponents say, goes against state law on coastal development.

The proposal to enhance the aging, county-owned marina includes building high-rise office buildings, a 22-story hotel and up to 2,420 residential units.

Friends of Marina del Rey filed the lawsuit Monday, joined by the Pioneer Skippers Boat Owners Assn. of Marina del Rey and the Sierra Club.

Supporters say that the redevelopment plan, which was given the go-ahead by the Board of Supervisors, would boost revenue from the publicly owned land and harbor and raise sagging property values.
