Narcotics officers and members of an elite Ventura Police Department special-weapons squad will soon wear state-of-the-art bulletproof vests.

The Ventura City Council has approved spending more than $35,000 for 23 vests for the Special Weapons and Tactics squad that were designed in part by Los Angeles County sheriff’s officials.

“These vests offer our officers, especially those who expose themselves to the gravest danger, the best protection and technological expertise available on the market today,” Police Chief Richard Thomas told the council.

The new vests weigh 24 pounds less than the 30-pound vests his officers have worn for years, Thomas said.

The cost of the vests will be taken from an asset-seizure fund, the chief said.
