Authorities were investigating the stabbing death of a 19-year-old fan during a clash among about three dozen rival Argentine supporters after their country’s 4-0 victory over Chile in the America Cup soccer tournament.

An interior ministry report said Daniel Hernan Garcia died of knife wounds during a street fight between two “ barras bravas ,” the notorious Argentine supporters’ clubs, after the match on Tuesday in Paysandu, a Uruguayan town on the border with Argentina.

Unofficial reports said the factions involved in the fight were fans of Argentina’s San Lorenzo and Platense clubs.

On Wednesday, Paraguay defeated Venezuela, 3-2, in rain and lightning to qualify for the second round.

Wednesday’s other game in the 12-nation championship--Uruguay vs. Mexico in Montevideo--was rained out and rescheduled for today.

The United States plays Argentina on Friday, also in Paysandu, and needs a victory or a tie to advance to the quarterfinals.

Goals by Jose Cardozo, Juan Villamayor and Carlos Gamarra, the last with seven minutes to play, gave Paraguay a surprisingly difficult victory over traditionally weak Venezuela.

Gabriel Miranda and Luis Dolgetta scored for the Venezuelans, who were eliminated after losing all three first-round games.
