It’s Your Life : WHERE’S CHET? : Drummer to Rejoin Band in Late August

That’s the Chet McCracken Jazz Band playing regularly at the new Oxnard Airport restaurant. But where’s Chet McCracken?

The well-known jazz drummer is on the road with the Doobie Brothers and won’t rejoin his band until after the Doobies’ Aug. 25 date at the Greek Theatre.

Reached in Napa, where he was rehearsing with Doobies Michael McDonald and Jeff (Skunk) Baxter, McCracken said he never expected his Doobie gig to last this long. “But they just keep going and going.”

In his absence, guitarist Chris Pinnick, a veteran of super group Chicago and McCracken’s musical partner for a decade, is leading the band. With him is keyboardist Ben Armentano, who has played with Larry Coryell and reed man Mitch Reilly.

The trio is playing at Hangar Five, the latest incarnation of the airport’s restaurant. The decor includes a wide array of military memorabilia and vintage weaponry.
