GOINGS ON : Musical Is Presented at Santa Barbara High : The multimedia show centers on a teen-ager whose life is spiraling downward.

Santa Barbara’s Access Theatre, through its Youth Access to the Arts program, will present “Leap! A Musical Quest” at the Santa Barbara High School Performing Arts Center.

The multimedia musical centers around a teen-ager who has checked out of life and is spiraling downward. But thanks to the magic of theater, he discovers himself, and the hopes, loves and innocence of life.

Preview shows are Friday and July 20 at 8 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for children). The regular run will be July 21 through 23 and July 27 through 29 at 8 p.m., and July 23 at 2 p.m.

The Santa Barbara Grand Opera Assn. will present Giuseppe Verdi’s “La Traviata” at the Lobero Theatre beginning Friday.

Fabrizio Melano of New York’s Metropolitan Opera company is the stage director, and Valery Rivkin, who will join the Met as assistant conductor for the 1996-97 season, is the show’s conductor.

“La Traviata” will be presented Friday, Wednesday and July 21 at 8 p.m., Sunday and July 23 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $16 to $24. Call 963-0761. The Lobero is at 33 E. Canon Perdido St.

Leroy Sibbles, Barry Lewellyn and Earl Morgan--who made up the reggae band the Heptones in the ‘60s and ‘70s--have reunited and are on a mini-tour of Southern California. The group will perform at The Underground club in Santa Barbara on Saturday. Ventura’s own Conscious Souls will open.

Show time is 8:45 p.m. General admission is $12 in advance, $14 at the door. Admission for children under age 12 with an adult is free. There will be an additional $2 charge for minors older than 12 at the door.

They came, they sawed, they conquered. That will be something of a theme of the day during the Tree Trimmers Jamboree on Saturday at Alameda Park in Santa Barbara.

About 200 professional trimmers will compete in sawing, tree climbing and aerial rescue competitions. For home gardeners, there will be a variety of horticultural demonstrations.

The festivities will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is free. Call 564-5436. Alameda Park is at Sola and Garden streets.

A poodle parade, cancan dancers and the Eiffel Tower--all in Santa Barbara at the same time.

This could mean only one thing--it’s French Festival time. The eighth annual celebration will take place Saturday and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., at Oak Park. In addition to those attractions, there will be Moroccan belly dancing, Middle Eastern music, a tribute to Maurice Chevalier, numerous dance exhibitions and plenty of French food. Admission is free.

Official records of the Apollo-Soyuz joint U.S.-Soviet space mission will be on exhibit Saturday and Sunday at the Karpeles Manuscript Library Museum in Montecito. Documents detailing the space satellite Sputnik and the cosmonauts involved in the mission will also be on display.

Admission is free. The museum is at 430 Hot Springs Road. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days.

CONTINUING: The Santa Barbara City College Theatre Group is presenting the Tony Award-winning musical “The Secret Garden” through July 29. Show times are Thursday to Saturday at 8 p.m., Sundays at 2 p.m. Tickets for tonight’s preview show are $8.

After tonight, tickets on Friday and Saturday are $15 general admission and $9 for students. On Thursday and Sunday, tickets are $13 general admission, $8 students. Call 965-5935. The college is at 721 Cliff Drive.
