CAMARILLO : Embattled School Gains Accreditation
Gateway School in Camarillo has received a three-year accreditation from the Western Assn. of Schools and Colleges, one of only three such schools in California to become fully accredited, officials said.
The school provides education to about 450 students, including pregnant teen-agers, youths on probation and those who have been rejected by mainstream public schools in Ventura County. It has recently come under attack by the Ventura County grand jury and members of the county Board of Education as being poorly managed and run.
But Ventura County Supt. of Schools Charles Weis said the accreditation awarded by the independent association proves that Gateway offers quality programs.
It is a “validation of the quality of the educational program provided to students at Gateway,” he said.
Full accreditation status at the school will aid students who decide to go to college, officials said.
