At Olympic Stadium, Carlos Perez again looked unbeatable. Back in the National League, Sid Fernandez seemed uncomfortable.

Perez spoiled Fernandez’s debut for Philadelphia, pitching 7 1/3 strong innings Sunday at Montreal, leading the Expos past the Phillies, 5-1.

Perez (8-2) improved to 7-0 at Olympic Stadium, giving up one run on seven hits.

“I try to do the best I can for my fans,” Perez said, whose earned-run average at home is 1.42. “They make me happy and it makes me stronger.”

Fernandez (0-1), released July 9 by the Baltimore Orioles, pitched 5 1/3 innings and gave up five runs on seven hits and two walks.

Wil Cordero and Tim Laker each homered and drove in two runs. Cordero hit a two-run homer in the first. Laker hit a solo shot in the fourth and added an RBI single in the sixth.

San Francisco 7, Houston 6--J.R. Phillips homered leading off the 14th inning at San Francisco.

Phillips, who was batting .152, hit his fifth homer of the season on a 2-2 pitch by Doug Brocail (2-1).

“It’s a sad feeling when you know it’s time to walk straight to the dugout because you know it’s out,” Brocail said. “It’s a sad feeling when you’re the last guy out there.”

Houston’s Jeff Bagwell homered leading off the ninth, his third homer in three games and his 13th of the year, to tie the score. Bagwell, who had a run-scoring single earlier in the game, has 30 RBIs in his last 27 games.

San Diego 3, Atlanta 1--Steve Finley and Ken Caminiti hit solo homers and rookie Glenn Dishman gave up only two hits in 7 1/3 innings at San Diego.

Finley went three for five and Tony Gwynn extended his hitting streak to 14 games with a sixth-inning single. The Padres had 12 hits off five Brave pitchers and also stranded 12 runners.

Trevor Hoffman pitched the ninth for his 12th save.

New York 2, Colorado 1--Rico Brogna singled home the winning run with two outs in the 10th inning at New York.

Jose Vizcaino opened the 10th with a single off Mark Thompson (2-1) and was sacrificed to second by pinch-hitter Tim Bogar.

Brett Butler’s groundout sent Vizcaino to third and, after Edgardo Alfonzo walked, Brogna singled on a 1-0 pitch from Thompson.

Chicago 7, Cincinnati 5--Brian McRae homered, tripled and singled twice at Chicago.

Kevin Foster (7-5) gave up five hits--all but one a homer--in seven innings for the Cubs, who avoided a four-game sweep. Foster walked none and struck out eight.
