The Cypress Recall Committee has submitted 6,766 signatures in its effort to recall Councilman Walter K. Bowman.

Deputy City Clerk Lillian Haina said Tuesday that if 4,406 of the signatures are verified, Bowman will be forced to face a recall election. Haina said the completed petitions have been submitted to the office of the Orange County Registrar of Voters for a check of the signatures of registered voters.

“We are hoping the check of signatures will be completed in 10 days or two weeks,” Haina said. She added that the goal is to consolidate all recall actions into one election.

The Cypress Recall Committee earlier this year submitted recall petitions aimed at Mayor Cecilia L. Age and Councilwoman Gail H. Kerry. The registrar of voters office certified enough valid signatures on those petitions to require a recall election for both council members. The election has been scheduled for Nov. 7.

If the petitions against Bowman are similarly certified, he also will face a recall vote on Nov. 7.

The recall move was launched following the City Council’s vote Sept. 26 to allow a controversial carpet warehouse proposed for the Valley View Street area. Residents in the area have protested that the warehouse would ruin the environment.
