OXNARD : Civic Center Renewal Referred for Study

Share

Oxnard officials asked a committee Tuesday to study making about $11 million in improvements to the city’s aging community center, auditorium and civic center.

The City Council voted Tuesday to authorize the Performing Arts Foundation Committee to look at financing and designs for the building improvements. The council also approved renaming the group as the City Facilities Committee.

Projects to be studied include remodeling the lobby and facade of the Hobson Way auditorium and community center and reorganizing the West 3rd Street civic center’s entrance.

“How can we make [the civic center] more service-oriented?” asked Andres Herrera, a city councilman and committee member. “A quadrangle would allow more people to get access to city services.”

According to City Planner Matthew Winegar, the city has not budgeted money for the improvements and will ask the committee to propose funding sources, including bonds, the sale of city property and private fund-raising.

“It is easy to have the vision,” Herrera said. “What we’re trying to make sure is that it is a realistic vision.”
